Duo represent Rutgers in Big Ten accolade
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers had two student-athletes earn the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award on Wednesday. Men's basketball student-athlete Paul Mulcahy and women's tennis student-athlete Maya Jacobs earned the accolade.
Mulcahy recently completed his sophomore season as a point guard on the men's basketball team, leading the Scarlet Knights to the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991 and first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983. A member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Bayonne, N.J. native started a charitable initiative, the Grateful4 Foundation, with a mission of spreading the idea of gratitude and inspire a chain reaction of selfless acts. His journey was featured on a recent episode of Big Ten Network's The Journey. On the court, Mulcahy averaged 5.9 points and notched 80 assists and 18 steals.
Jacobs was previously named the 2021 ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award National Winner, ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Northeast Regional Award winner and was named the NJAIAW Woman of the Year. A member of the Rutgers Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Jacobs has worked with a group of administrators and fellow student-athletes to address issues of racial and social justice. In the classroom, the communication major is a three-time academic All-Big Ten recipient and Dean's List honoree.
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The Linden, New Jersey, native has competed in 63 matches for Rutgers since arriving "On the Banks," leading the Scarlet Knights at the No. 1 singles position for the last three seasons.
This is the second straight season that a men's basketball student-athlete earns the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, with Akwasi Yeboah garnering the accolade in 2020. The last women's tennis student-athlete to earn the award was Kat Muzik in 2019.
