Scarlet Knights will travel to Pirates to resume Garden State Hardwood Classic
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The annual men's basketball matchup between Rutgers and Seton Hall returns for the 2021-22 season as the two teams face off in the Garden State Hardwood Classic, presented by Affinity Federal Credit Union. The game is slated for Sunday, Dec. 12 at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Rutgers defeated then-No. 22 ranked Seton Hall, 68-48 in front of a sold-out crowd at the RAC on Dec. 14, 2019 in the most recent meeting. The Scarlet Knights limited the Pirates to a season-low 32.2 percent (19-of-59) shooting to earn their largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in program history. The 20-point win marked RU's biggest over its rival since downing SHU by 32 points, 81-49, at the RAC on January 7, 1998.
The game will mark the 72nd matchup in an all-time series that dates back to 1916.
The Big Ten previously announced the Scarlet Knights' conference opponents for the 2021-22 season. Last season, Rutgers played the second-hardest strength of schedule nationally per ESPN.
Rutgers is coming off of its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991. The Scarlet Knights defeated No. 7 seed Clemson for the team's first NCAA Tournament victory in 38 years since 1983. Rutgers posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1990-91 and 1991-92 and won double-digit conference games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1989-90 and 1990-91.
