2021 Baseball Alumni Weekend: Oct. 9-11

Scarlet Knights to retire No. 49 at alumni game

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The annual Rutgers baseball alumni weekend returns Oct. 9-11. The event is highlighted by the retirement of Glen Gardner's No. 49 at the alumni game on Oct. 10 and wraps up the following day with the golf outing at Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township.

"We are looking forward to a great weekend honoring Glen at the field where he has positively impacted so many players," head coach Steve Owens said. "In addition, we are excited to get back to regular business and enjoy a great day of golf with our alumni, fans, boosters, families and friends. I am hoping for a tremendous turnout for what will be a special weekend of celebration for Rutgers baseball!"

The weekend begins with the Rutgers football homecoming game on Oct. 9 (noon) versus Michigan State inside SHI Stadium. Moving to Bainton Field on Sunday, the program will officially retire Gardner's No. 49, joining Jeff Torborg's No. 10 and Fred Hill's No. 24. The game that day features the current team taking on the alumni.

Stay tuned for more information on how to sign up for the Monday golf outing.

Todd Frazier, Glen Gardner

A Rutgers baseball legend, Gardner was one of the most prolific hitters in school history and returned to work 29 seasons on staff. He was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.

Gardner spent 18 seasons as an assistant coach under Hill before serving as the director of baseball operations, volunteer assistant coach and senior advisor to the head coach. The Scarlet Knights secured 870 wins, eight NCAA Regional appearances, seven regular season conference championships and five conference tournament titles with Gardner on staff. That included hosting an NCAA Regional in 2000, a rarity for a Northeast school. Gardner played a key role in identifying, recruiting and developing talent.
