
Tiernan Named National USA TODAY Athlete of the Year Nominee

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Incoming Scarlet Knight Riley Tiernan has been named a nominee for the national USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, presented by U.S. Polo Assn. Tiernan is New Jersey's honoree for selection as national athlete of the year in girls soccer.
Tiernan led the way for Eastern High School in 2020, with a team-high 15 goals and 10 assists. Her performance helped push the Vikings to a 15-0 record, earning recognition as the 2020 NJ.com Girls Soccer Team of the Year.
The forward ended her high school career with 85 goals and 87 assists, owning the school records in points in a single game (10), goals in a single game (5), assists in a single game (5), tied for points in a season (100), assists in a season (34) and in career assists (87).
Tiernan most recently competed in the 2020 High School All-America game, helping lift the East to a 4-1 victory over the West. The Voorhees, New Jersey, native was named the East MVP, recording a game-high two goals in the win. She joins the Rutgers' 2021-22 incoming class that ranks No. 7 nationally.
Winners from each state in 27 sports will be featured in the first USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, presented by U.S. Polo Assn. The show, hosted by Michael Strahan and Rob Gronkowski, will stream on-demand on the show website starting at 8 p.m. ET Thursday, August 5. The two legendary football stars and sports castors will be joined by many other top names including Sue Bird, Shaquille O'Neal, Katie Ledecky, Kevin Garnett, Chipper Jones and Alex Morgan.
These nominees will be presented, and then the top-three finalists will be featured, culminating in the reveal of the national athlete of the year for that sport. Several awards span across all sports and classifications, including awards for the team of the year, coach of the year, and the male and female athletes of the year.
