PHILADELPHIA – No. 8 Rutgers field hockey battled against its fourth ranked opponent in the first five games of the season, taking No. 17 St. Joe's to the wire in a 2-1 loss. The Scarlet Knights fell behind 2-0 but battled back in the final quarter.
Katie Larmour had the team's lone goal, but a late push came up just short.
St. Joe's held an 11-7 advantage in shots, while RU had a 7-6 margin in corners (all in the second half).
Gianna Glatz made three saves for the Scarlet Knights.
Kerrie Burns and Milena Redlinshoefer picked up assists on Larmour's goal.
The game was scoreless until late in the second quarter. St. Joe's capitalized on a penalty corner to score the game's first goal, as a shot from the top of the circle found the back of the net. At halftime, the Hawks held a 1-0 lead.
In the third quarter, RU looked to turn up the pressure on the Hawks, earning three corner opportunities. However, the Scarlet Knights were unable to find the back of the net.
SJU responded with another goal in the final minute of the third quarter. The ball was played in front where the Hawks' forward lifted the ball into the air and then hit it into the back of the net.
That made the score 2-0 entering the fourth quarter, but RU answered back. The Scarlet Knights would capitalize off a penalty corner.
Milena Redlingshoefer inserted the ball, where
Kerrie Burns stopped it at the top. Up stepped
Katie Larmour, who hammer the ball home for her first goal of the season and cutting the deficit in half.
The team continued to push late, earning multiple corners in the final minutes. RU had a final opportunity with 12 seconds left, but a shot off a corner attempt went just high, and the clock ran out on the comeback attempt.
Rutgers is back in action next weekend for a pair of games. The Scarlet Knights host an in-state foe on Friday, welcoming No. 22 Monmouth for a 3 p.m. matchup. On Sunday, RU travels to No. 19 Delaware.
