Carlson Leads Cross Country At Iona

Freshman posts second-straight top-five finish as both squads place fifth at Meet of Champions
BRONX, N.Y. – Rutgers men's and women's cross country returned to competition on Friday for the Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park. Both squads placed fifth in the overall team scoring. Freshman Alex Carlson earned a fifth-place finish for the second-consecutive meet to lead the Scarlet Knights in the women's 5K. Senior Will Berger was the top performer on the men's side, finishing the 8K in 16th place.
"The men and women had solid outings at the Iona Meet of Champions," said head coach Matthew Jelley. "On the men's side with Will Berger, Billy Hill and Ryan Mitchell leading the way. Both Will and Billy finished in the top 20 with all three posting personal best times on that course.
"On the women's side, rookie Alexandra Carlson continued her torrid start to the season leading the way with a fifth-place finish. Kiera Nealon and Olympia Martin had great finishes with both of them in the top 20."
Rutgers posted a total of six top-25 finishes between the two squads. On the women's side, Carlson ran a time of 18:36.5 to take fifth, followed by Kiera Nealon who placed 15th in 19:08.2 and Olympia Martin in 20th with a time of 19:20.7. Berger led the men's team with a time of 26:26.9 to place 16th, while Billy Hill added a 19th-place showing in 26:40.2 and Ryan Mitchell finished 25th in 26:56.7.
Adding to the scoring for the women were Michelle Coyotl-Varela in 28th with a time of 19:43.1 and Erin Bertscha in 33rd with a time of 19:53.3. For the men, Patrick Walsh placed 35th in 27:39.6 and Dan Pedretti finished 44th in 27:59.2 to round out the top performers for the Scarlet Knights.
