Ann Arbor, Mich. – Sophomore
Alex Carlson earned a top-20 finish to lead Rutgers cross country at the 2022 Big Ten Championships on Friday, Oct. 28 at the U-M Golf Course. The women's squad placed 12th in the team standings and the men's team placed 14th.
Â
Carlson finished 17th overall with a time of 20:40.1, shaving more than a minute off her debut time at the 2021 championships as a freshman. Her performance was the second-best individual finish for a Scarlet Knight at the Big Ten Championships since 2015 (Allyson Black, 16th).
Â
Kassidy Johnson finished 50th with a time of 21:20.0, followed by Sofia Condron (71st),
Michelle Lupu (94th) and
Isabella Godish (120th).
Â
"The women were led by Alex and Kassidy who both finished in the top 50," said head cross country coach
Matthew Jelley. "This helped us to a 12th-place finish, six points shy of what would have been our best finish. This tied our best finish for the women at Big Tens matched only by the 2014 squad."
Â
Justin Cornetta placed 50th with a time of 25:10.3 to lead the Scarlet Knights on the men's side. He was joined in scoring by William Hare (77th),
Ryan Mitchell (102nd),
Will Berger (103rd) and Liam Tilton (106th).
Â
"Justin's finish was the highest for a Rutgers runner since joining the Big Ten, beating the 51st place finish by Connor Murphy in 2015," said Jelley. "It was also our lowest point total since 2016."
Â
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Friday, Nov. 11 for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Penn State Blue/White Golf Courses.
