PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 28, 2022) – No. 21 Rutgers field hockey battled hard against a top-five team on Friday afternoon, but ultimately fell to No. 3 Penn State by a score of 3-1 at Bauer Field.
The Scarlet Knights weathered an early barrage from the Nittany Lions in the first quarter, keeping the opponents off the scoreboard despite a 6-1 differential in shots. Goalkeeper Sophia Howard made three saves in the frame.
PSU would ultimately jump ahead in the second quarter on a penalty corner, with 11:25 on the clock.
As the team has all season, RU bounced back right back. With under a minute remaining until halftime, Rachel Houston put in a goal off a saved shot from Guillermina Causarano, tying the game at 1-1 after 30 minutes.
Rutgers continued to press in the second half, outshooting Penn State 8-3 in the final 30 minutes. The Nittany Lions made more of their opportunities, however, putting in a goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters to secure the 3-1 victory.
Houston's goal was her third of the season and gave her 10 points on the year, making her one of four Scarlet Knights with double-digit points.
Howard's three saves in net bring her season total to 73 in 16 games played.
Rutgers is back at home on Sunday against No. 19 James Madison for senior day on the Banks. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start time.
