STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Rutgers cross country picked up an eighth-place finish in the team standings on the women's side at the 2022 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, Nov. 11 on the campus of Penn State. The Scarlet Knights were led by three top-50 finishers as
Alex Carlson,
Kassidy Johnson and
Sofia Condron help guide the program to its best-ever finish, topping a previous high mark of 10th in 2014.
"On a soggy day in State College, Pennsylvania the women's and men's team showed a lot of grit," said head cross country coach
Matthew Jelley. "The women started off the day and put together a great effort for an eighth-place finish which was their best finish ever. The men were led by
Justin Cornetta who ran a great race to finish 39th which was the best individual finish on the men's side since 2018."
Carlson finished 20th overall in a field of more than 190 runners with a time of 20:53.5 to pace Rutgers. For her efforts, Carlson earned All-Mid Atlantic Region honors with her top-20 finish, the Scarlet Knights first all-region selection since 2015.
The women's race featured 26 schools running a 6K course. Carlson was followed by Johnson in 41st with a time of 21:33.6, while Condron ran 21:38.2 to finish 45th. The group received additional scoring from
Michelle Lupu in 59th (21:53.2) and
Isabella Godish who took 86th (22:28.0).
The men's squad placed 17th overall out of 26 teams, led by
Justin Cornetta who finished 39th in a field of 180 runner. He posted a time of 31:14.2 on the 10K course and was the highest individual finisher on the men's side since 2018. Cornetta was followed by
Gavin Richards in 96th place (32:17.0),
Will Berger in 111th (32:29.8),
Liam Tilton in 116th place (32:37.8) and
Ryan Mitchell in 117th with a time of 32:39.0.
