PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Jackson Temple scored the fifth and decisive penalty kick to lead the No. 2-seeded Rutgers men's soccer team (8-4-6, 4-2-2) over No. 7 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Quarterfinal match on Friday night at Yurcak Field.

The Scarlet Knights and Badgers went 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime without a score to send the contest into a penalty kick shootout.

Pablo Avila, Thomas DeVizio, MD Myers, Matthew Acosta and Temple all buried their attempts while goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton made a clutch stop on Wisconsin's second attempt to help solidify the victory.

Game Notes

The decision marks the first time Rutgers has advanced in the Big Ten Tournament in PK's since joining the conference. The team's 2021 season ended by falling to Maryland in penalty kicks, 5-4.
Wednesday's trip to the Big Ten Semifinals will be the first for the program since 2015. That season, the team defeated Northwestern in the quarterfinals (2-0) before falling to Ohio State in the next round (0-4). RU also went onto the second round of the NCAA Tournament that fall.
With their highest seed in program history at No. 2, this will also signify the first time Rutgers will host a semifinal game since joining the Big Ten.
Rutgers secured the advantage in shots, 14-11, as well as shots on goal, 5-2.
With 114 total points through 17 games, this season marks the first time RU has reached 100+ points since 2015, when the team ended with 123.
Through 18 games, the Scarlet Knights have seen 12 unique goal scorers on 37 goals for 114 points. Myers (13), Temple (5), Avila (4), Bouregy (3), Maeland (2), Le Guennec (2) and Abbey (2) all have multiple goals.
14 Scarlet Knights saw the pitch on Saturday afternoon. Dalton in addition to Joey Zalinsky, Hugo Le Guennec, DeVizio, Chris Tiao, Cole Cruthers, Myers and Acosta played the entire 110 minutes.

Looking Ahead

No. 3 seed Ohio State defeated No. 6 Michigan State on Friday night, 1-0, to advance onto the Semifinals. Rutgers and Ohio State will meet at Yurcak Field on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The game, set to start at 6 p.m. or 8 p.m., will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network.
