Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Rutgers softball team continued winning ways on day two of the Pirate Clash hosted by ECU for its best start to a season since 2008.
The Scarlet Knights downed Wagner, 5-0, for its first shutout of the season and needed extra innings to sink Colgate, 5-4, to improve to 6-3 on the season. Rutgers has won four-straight.
Rutgers 5, Wagner 0
- Gabrielle Callaway brought home three runs on sacrifice flies marking her second multiple RBI game of the young 2022 campaign.
- Kyleigh Sand scored three runs, including two off Callaway sac flies.
- Payton Lincavage went 2-for-4 for a pair of RBIs and a run.
- Jaden Vickers upped her record to 4-0. She threw for six innings allowing five hits and fanning a trio of Seahawks.
- It was Gabrielle Callaway and Kyleigh Sand giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead by the third inning. Sand opened the game with a double and reached base on balls in the third scoring bringing both runs off sacrifice flies from Callaway.
- Kobie Hura and Sand led off the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles and both reached home on Payton Lincavage's double down the left field line. Lincavage went on to add the game's final run on another Callaway sac fly.
Rutgers 5, Colgate 4 - 8 innings
- Gabrielle Callaway knocked in the game-winning run in the eighth to continue Rutgers' win streak.
- Ashley Hitchcock went the distance for her first complete game of the year and struck out a career-high 12. It was the most batters send down on strikes since Jaden Vicker's 13 against ETSU on Feb. 12, 2020. Â She improved to 2-3 inside the circle.
- Payton Lincavage ended the game 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
- Maddie Lawson hit 3-for-3 with an RBI.
- A double by Morgan Farrah gave Colgate a run in the first, but Rutgers got it right back in the bottom of the inning. Payton Lincavage led off with a walk, advanced to third off an error at first and stole home to tie the game up at 1-1
- The Red Raiders reclaimed the lead in the third, 3-2, on an RBI double by Kara Fusco.
- The Scarlet Knights, however, forced extra innings thanks to a Taylor Lane sac fly in the bottom of the seventh. Leilani Chavez led off RU with a single up the middle and found her way to third setting up the score thanks to a Kayla Bock walk and sac bunt from Kobie Hura.
- Colgate retook the lead in the eighth on a base hit by Meaghan Houk to right-center.
- Rutgers, however, knocked in two runs on back-to-back hits by Lincavage and Gabrielle Callaway for the win.Â
The Rutgers softball team closes out the Pirate Clash on Sunday in a rematch with the Colgate at 10 a.m.
