DETROIT – Sebastian Rivera (141) wrapped up his historic career with a third-place finish and
Greg Bulsak (197) added All-America honors to close out action for Rutgers wrestling at the 2022 NCAA Championships on Saturday in Detroit.
Rivera defeated No. 8 seed Grant Willits (Oregon State) by 6-5 decision to become just the second bronze medalist in program history. Bulsak out wrestled his No. 14 seed to finish eighth in his weight class, locking up NCAA All-America status for the first time in his career.
Rutgers Team Score Through Session V: 28.5 (T/20th)
Session V Attendance: 18,204
Total Attendance (Five Sessions): 87,933
With seven qualifiers and two All-Americans, RU finished tied for 20th with 28.5 team points. All seven Scarlet Knights contributed at least one victory during the three-day tournament, which included multiple wins from Bulsak, Rivera,
John Poznanski (184) and
Dylan Shawver (125).
Rutgers has produced two or more All-Americans in each of the past seven seasons and at least one top-three placer at three of the past four national tournaments under head coach
Scott Goodale.
"It always feels good to get guys on the podium," Goodale said. "Everyone that we brought won at least a match, and I don't think we've ever done that since I've been here. The national tournament is a very unfriendly place, so I'm proud of all of these guys."
Rivera advanced to the 141-pound bronze medal match after his 3-2 decision over No. 4 seed Real Woods (Stanford) in the consolation semifinals. Up 1-0 in the second period, Rivera got deep on a double leg for the only takedown of the bout. Woods added back-to-back escape points, but Rivera held off the national semifinalists to secure his spot in the third-place match. Rivera followed against Willits and landed takedowns in the first and third periods en route to a 6-5 win over the Beaver.
The Toms River, New Jersey, native finished his illustrious collegiate career as a five-time All-American (four NCAA, one NWCA) and two-time Big Ten Champion. Rivera produced 115 career wins, which included 20 at the NCAA Tournament 42 for Rutgers.
Rivera is the fourth individual to secure a top-three finish at nationals for the Scarlet Knights, joining
Anthony Ashnault (2019),
Nick Suriano (2018 & 2019) and Mike Leta (1960). Rivera and Leta are the only national bronze medalist in program history.
"I really wanted to win that last one," Rivera said. "I was able to show everyone in my dad's club and everyone around New Jersey that it's possible to come home and win. We have the right staff and you can get it done at home."
Bulsak lost by a tight 3-2 decision to No. 3 seed Eric Schultz (Nebraska) to finish eighth in his weight class. The graduate transfer from Clarion – who produced the 100th win of his collegiate career earlier in the championships – locked up All-America laurels with his come-for-behind 3-2 decision over No. 8 seed Lou DePrez (Binghamton) during Friday night's blood round.
"All of my decisions leading up to this weekend paid off," Bulsak said. "I knew all of my hard work and everything I did would pay off sooner or later. I just believed in it and it worked out. It's a great feeling."
