PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior captain and midseason All-American Cassidy Spilis was named to the Tewaaraton Award Top 25, announced Thursday by the organization. A two-time Tewaaraton Watch List selection, Spilis is the first student-athlete in program history to be recognized as a top-25 candidate for the national player-of-the-year award.
Five finalists will be selected from the top-25 list, which will be announced in three weeks at the conclusion of the regular season.
Spilis has been one of the top goal scorers in the country this season, as her 51 goals ranks third in the Big Ten and 17th nationally. Spilis became the first RU player since 1998 to produce 50 or more goals in a single season and just the seventh player all-time to cross the 50-plus threshold for the Scarlet Knights. Spilis has also collected 53 draw controls, 31 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers this spring and has tallied three or more goals 11 times during the 2022 campaign.
A native of Tabernacle, New Jersey, Spilis has already established herself as one of the top midfielders in program history. Spilis has accounted for 126 goals during her three seasons 'On the Banks', good for seventh in program history, while her 151 draw controls are third on RU's all-time list.
Spilis earned several individual awards last season, which included 2021 IWLCA All-America laurels, 2021 IWLCA All-Region accolades and 2021 First Team All-Big Ten designation
Rutgers closes its 2022 regular-season home schedule when it hosts Penn State Saturday in Piscataway. First draw is set for noon ET at SHI Stadium.
