Callaway & Sand Named NFCA First Team All-Region

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers' first-ever First Team All-Big Ten softball honorees continued to collect awards as the duo of Gabrielle Callaway and Kyleigh Sand were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) First Team All-Region award winners.
Rutgers softball last landed two first-team all-region student-athletes back in 2014.
Callaway, a graduate student outfielder, is second in Rutgers single-season records with 47 RBIs and eighth with 10 home runs. Additionally, she ranks in the top ten in six Big Ten statistical categories including first in sacrifice flies (6), fifth in RBIs (47), eighth in home runs (10), batting average (.381) and on-base percentage (.478) and 10th in slugging percentage (.660). Her 10 home runs this season upped her total "On The Banks" to 17, just one long ball shy of cracking the Rutgers all-time top ten. Callaway's 47 RBIs, meanwhile, tie her for second on the single-season leaders list.
Sand, a sophomore shortstop in her first season at Rutgers, is the first Scarlet Knight since 2011 to hit .400 or higher in a season and her team-leading 48 runs helped RU to the most runs since 2015. Among Rutgers single-season leaders, Sand's 66 hits tie her for third, her .400 batting average places her sixth, and her 22 stolen bases land her seventh. She also ranks among the top ten in seven Big Ten statistical categories including second in hits, third in batting average, fourth in runs scored and stolen bases, sixth in on-base percentage (.498) and ninth in doubles (12).
Callaway and Sand become eligible for the 2022 NFCA Division I All-America squads that will be announced on Wednesday, June 1.
