SARASOTA, Fla. – No. 16 Rutgers rowing sends its Varsity 4 boat to the A/B semifinals at the NCAA Championships and two boats to the C/D semifinals after heat and repechage racing on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park.
With two automatic qualifiers to the A/B semifinals available in each heat, all three boats - the Varsity 8, the 2nd Varsity 8, and the Varsity 4 - placed fourth in their morning heats and entered the evening repechage races for a second chance at the A/B semifinals.
Another two spots to the A/B semis were available in each repechage. The Varsity 4 grabbed one of those spots by finishing second in their repechage, overcoming No. 12 SMU midway through the 2,000-meter course and placing only behind No. 10 California by 0.8 second.
The Varsity 8 was third in their repechage, just a half-second off the A/B qualifying time behind No. 12 SMU and less than two seconds off the race win by No. 15 Oregon State.
The 2nd Varsity 8 was also third in another tight race, 1.4 seconds behind No. 8 Michigan and three seconds off winner and No. 11 ranked UPenn's pace.
Saturday's semifinals will have the top six spots up for grabs for Sunday's C final, which awards national places 13-18. The remaining boats in the C/D semifinal move to Sunday's D final for national places 19-22.
