Emily Mason Named Big Ten Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Sep 20 | Women's Soccer
Sophomore back helped hold No. 21 Ohio State to two shots on goal in the 2-0 shutout victory
ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore defender Emily Mason of Rutgers women's soccer has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the period ending Sept. 18.
This is Mason's first career weekly Big Ten honor, and the third for the No. 4 ranked Rutgers program this season, joining Allison Lowrey and Sam Kroeger's Offensive Player of the Week honors from earlier in the year.
Mason anchored the central defense in a 2-0 shutout of No. 21 Ohio State on Sunday as the 2022 Scarlet Knights became the first team in program history to start a season 9-0-0. Mason stymied the Buckeye attack, which only managed two shots on target at Yurcak Field.
The Flemington, N.J. native played all 90 minutes on Sunday, a feat she has accomplished in six of her seven matches this season. Mason missed the first two matches of the year while serving on the United States Youth National Team in Costa Rica for the 2022 U20 Women's World Cup.
Mason has aided a stingy Rutgers defense that season that has allowed a 0.56 goals-against average with five shutouts in nine contests. The Scarlet Knight backs have allowed five or fewer shots on goal in all nine matches, including six with three shots on goal or less by the opposition.
Rutgers heads out on the road for a Big Ten Network televised contest at No. 8 Penn State on Thurs., Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. before hosting Maryland on Sun., Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. at Yurcak, also airing live on Big Ten Network.
