DeVizio Scores Last Second Equalizer Against No. 11 Ohio State

Thomas DeVizio scores his first goal of the season in the final two seconds of Friday night's contest to tie No. 11 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With two seconds left in regulation, Thomas DeVizio scored his first goal of the season to lead the Rutgers men's soccer team (5-1-4, 2-0-1) to tie No. 11 Ohio State (5-1-4, 2-1-1), 2-2. 

After having a goal called back in the third minute of play, Myers came through once again 29 minutes later to put the Scarlet Knights on top, 1-0.  
 

However, with just five second left in the first half, the Buckeyes secured the equalizer to tie up the score, 1-all. 

Ohio State followed up with another score, just 10 minutes into the second half to take the 2-1 edge.  

The lead didn't last though, as DeVizio found the back of the net off a pass from Cole Cruthers with just two minutes on the clock to tie the score back up, 2-2.

Game Notes  

  • DeVizio last second goal marks the second of his career and his first of the season. He also scored against Delaware to open the 2021 season.  
  • The last time the Scarlet Knights tied a ranked opponent was last season, as they drew No. 8 Maryland (Sept. 28), 0-0. 
  • The 2-2 decision marks the fourth draw for Rutgers this season as the team also tied Princeton (1-1), Yale (2-2) and Fordham (1-1).  
  • Rutgers has now stayed unbeaten through the last eight games, not dropping a game in the month of September. The streak dates back to Sept. 2 with a 1-1 draw against Princeton.  
  • With the first goal of Friday's contest, Myers continues to top the stats with seven goals and 17 points. Through ten games this campaign, the senior forward has scored in five outings and registered points in six. 
  • With the assist on Myers' goal, Bouregy ranks third on the squad with nine points and three helpers. 
  • The Scarlet Knights have seen 11 unique goal scorers through 10 games. Myers (7), Temple (5), Bouregy (3) and Avila (2) all have multiple goals.  
  • 17 Scarlet Knights saw the pitch on Friday night. Goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton in addition to Joey Zalinsky, Hugo Le Guennec and Matthew Acosta played the entire 90 minutes.  

Looking Ahead   

Rutgers will return to Yurcak on Tuesday, Oct. 4 to welcome No. 8 Maryland for a 7 p.m. contest. The highly anticipated matchup will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
