The Four Things to Know...
A record 4,755 fans packed Jersey Mike's Arena last Friday to join Rutgers gymnastics in celebrating Title IX and Black Excellence, while witnessing a season-high 49.200 floor score by the Scarlet Knights to close out their 194.700 total. Rutgers welcomed Fisk University to Piscataway on Honoring Black Excellence Night, the first meet of Black History Month. Fisk made history this season by becoming the first historically black college or university (HBCU) to sponsor women's gymnastics.
The record crowd witnessed junior Avery Balser post her first career 9.9 on the bars, then later make her season debut on floor and post a career-high tying 9.8, boosting the Scarlet Knights' season-high 49.200 on floor in the quad meet.
Rutgers gymnastics reset three major records in a home dual against Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Jersey Mike's Arena. The 196.375 team score set a program record for a home meet, powered by a new school-record 49.375 on the balance beam and a 49.100 on vault, the program's sixth-highest score in history.
Senior captain Hannah Joyner paced the record-setting day with one of her own, scoring a 39.525 in the all-around to reset the program standard that stood since 2013. Her 9.925 on beam tied for the fifth-best score in school history, one she has reached six other times, and accouting for her program-record 29th overall 9.9 or higher score across the gym.
The Scarlet Knights combined to tie or set eight career highs in the record-breaking team performance, which was just 0.025 shy of the overall team score record of 196.400.
Rutgers has been strong at home, setting a program record for a home opener team score on Jan. 14 with a 195.550, placing second while hosting a quad at Jersey Mike's Arena behind four event wins and the top team score on beam (48.925). Hannah Joyner took the all-around with a season-best 39.175, while Emily Leese claimed floor with a 9.875 and Gianna Ortiz and Elia Aird shared the beam title with a 9.850. Rutgers' program record home opening score of 195.550 surpassed the previous record from Jan. 24, 2015 (195.375). It was the seventh highest home score in program history and tied for the 15th best team score overall at Rutgers.
Senior Hannah Joyner has been named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch for the 2023 season. Joyner is already one of the most decorated gymnasts in Rutgers history and prepares for her senior season "On the Banks." The first Rutgers gymnast to advance to NCAA Nationals on the balance beam, Joyner is seeking her third consecutive trip to NCAA Regionals this winter. She is the school record holder on beam with a 9.950 and all-around with a 39.525, as well as the school's standard bearer for most 9.9 or higher scores with 30 in her collegiate career. She is also the first Rutgers gymnast to record a 9.9 in all four events. The three-time All-Big Ten First Team honoree is just as consistent in the classroom with two Scholastic All-America honors and two Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards.
Following her all-around record on Jan. 21, Hannah Joyner made more history by becoming Rutgers' first selection as a Big Ten Gymnast of the Week. Overall, it is just the fifth Big Ten weekly honor since the team joined the conference in 2015, with Belle Huang (2) and Makenzey Shank earning Event Specialists of the Week and Joyner grabbing a Freshman of the Week nod in 2020.
