The Four Things to Know...
Hannah Joyner scored a 9.950 on beam for the third time in her career to tie the school record in a Big Ten dual at No. 18 Iowa on Saturday. The big score, coupled with junior captain Stephanie Zannella's anchoring and career-high 9.925, pushed the Scarlet Knights to a 49.175 on vault, the eighth-best score in program history.
Sharing the record with Erin McLachlan (2020), it is the fourth time in program history a gymnast has hit 9.950 on beam. Joyner has a 9.950 on beam in each her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.
Rutgers put together another record-breaking and historic performance at home on Feb. 11 in a dual against Maryland. While breaking the school record for team floor exercise with a 49.425, the Scarlet Knights posted their third-highest score in program history with a 196.325, the first time in school history with two 196+ scores in a single season. Their 49.275 on bars - led by a career-high 9.950 by Avery Balser and a career-high 9.925 by Hannah Joyner - was the third-highest in program history and highest since 2000. Eight gymnasts combined for 10 career-high or tying performances in the dual meet.
Joyner also broke her own school record in the all-around with a 39.575, powered by the career-high tying 9.950 on floor - the second-highest score in program history.
Rutgers has set two program apparatus records in 2023, and they both rank in the Top 30 for high scores across the country this season. RU's program-record 49.375 on beam from Jan. 21 is 20th in the nation, while the 49.425 on floor from Feb. 11 comes in at 30th in the country.
Senior Hannah Joyner has been named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch for the 2023 season and an AAI Award Nominee for the top gymnast in the nation. Joyner is already one of the most decorated gymnasts in Rutgers history and prepares for her senior season "On the Banks." The first Rutgers gymnast to advance to NCAA Nationals on the balance beam, Joyner is seeking her third consecutive trip to NCAA Regionals this winter. She is the school record holder on beam with a 9.950 and all-around with a 39.575, as well as the school's standard bearer for most 9.9 or higher scores with 32 in her collegiate career. She is also the first Rutgers gymnast to record a 9.9 in all four events. The three-time All-Big Ten First Team honoree is just as consistent in the classroom with two Scholastic All-America honors and two Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards.
Following her first all-around record on Jan. 21, Hannah Joyner made more history by becoming Rutgers' first selection as a Big Ten Gymnast of the Week. Overall, it is just the fifth Big Ten weekly honor since the team joined the conference in 2015, with Belle Huang (2) and Makenzey Shank earning Event Specialists of the Week and Joyner grabbing a Freshman of the Week nod in 2020.
