The Four Things to Know...
Kaitlyn Bertola is a team captain in 2023 and has competed in 10 meets for the Scarlet Knights over the last two seasons. She has a career-high of 9.750 on bars and as a junior, contributed to Rutgers' program-record 196.400. Her leadership and guidance has been crucial for a young team in 2023 that has overcome injuries to post three 196+ scores for the first time in program history. Bertola is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a WCGA Scholastic All-American.
Hannah Joyner is the most decorated gymnast in Rutgers history and has been at the forefront of the resurgence of the Scarlet Knights program during her four years "On the Banks," heading into the final stretch of her senior year having competed in the all-around in every single event of her college career. Joyner's all-around prowess has made an impact on her program and on the national gymnastics stage. She set the school record on beam with a 9.95, became the first RU gymnast to post 9.9's or higher in all four events, and became Rutgers' first NCAA Nationals qualifier on beam – just the third Scarlet Knight to advance to Nationals overall. This season, Joyner reset the school all-around record with a 39.575 and became the program's first Big Ten Gymnast of the Week following her first record-breaking performance of 39.525 in the all-around.
Jordyn Zieden-Weber has competed in 18 meets for Rutgers, shining on bars with a career-high 9.800, with one of those scores coming during her senior campaign on Feb. 11 to help the team score a 49.275 on bars - the third-highest score in program history and highest since 2000. As a junior, she contributed to history with a score in Rutgers' program-record 196.400 and its best Big Ten Championships score. She is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and two-time WCGA Scholastic All-American.
Jenna Ferguson competed in 20 meets for the Scarlet Knights before medically retiring and remaining with the program as a student-coach during the 2023 season. She posted career-high marks of 9.825 on vault, 9.800 on beam, and 9.850 on floor in 2020 and 2021. In 2021, Ferguson underwent successful surgery to remove a thymoma through the chest, and later battled a bout of pericarditis. She recovered and remained with the team as an integral member of the staff, specializing in supporting the high-scoring beam team in and out of the gym.
Rutgers gymnastics scored a 196.225 for its fourth-highest score in program history in a dual meet at NC State on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights' third 196+ of the season was powered by a 49.400 on floor (second-highest in school history) and a 49.150 on bars (fourth-highest in school history), and by senior Hannah Joyner, who led Rutgers in all four events and scored a 39.500 in the all-around, including a 9.900 on bars and 9.925 on floor.
Hannah Joyner scored a 9.950 on beam for the third time in her career to tie the school record in a Big Ten dual at No. 18 Iowa on Feb. 18. The big score, coupled with junior captain Stephanie Zannella's anchoring and career-high 9.925, pushed the Scarlet Knights to a 49.175 on vault, the ninth-best score in program history.
Sharing the record with Erin McLachlan (2020), it is the fourth time in program history a gymnast has hit 9.950 on beam. Joyner has a 9.950 on beam in each her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.
At the Big Five meet, Rutgers' beam team led the way again with a 49.225, the sixth-highest score in program history, aided by Jacqueline Manifold's career-high 9.850.
Rutgers put together another record-breaking and historic performance at home on Feb. 11 in a dual against Maryland. While breaking the school record for team floor exercise with a 49.425, the Scarlet Knights posted their third-highest score in program history with a 196.325, the first time in school history with two 196+ scores in a single season. Their 49.275 on bars - led by a career-high 9.950 by Avery Balser and a career-high 9.925 by Hannah Joyner - was the third-highest in program history and highest since 2000. Eight gymnasts combined for 10 career-high or tying performances in the dual meet.
Joyner also broke her own school record in the all-around with a 39.575, powered by the career-high tying 9.950 on floor - the second-highest score in program history.
