UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State completed the sweep of Rutgers Softball on Sunday afternoon with an 8-2 win over the Scarlet Knights.
The Nittany Lions used a pair of home runs – a two-run shot in the second and grand slam in the third – for a 6-0 lead.
Rutgers managed to halve its deficit in the top of the fourth of RBI base hits from Morgan Smith, Maddie Lawson and Taylor Fawcett. The Nittany Lions, however, tacked on two more runs on a double in the bottom half of the inning for the game's final margin.
The Scarlet Knights fell to 30-17 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions upped their mark to 22-13 overall and 4-9 in the league.
Penn State 8, Rutgers 3
- The Nittany Lions struck with one out in the second. With Lexie Black on first after leading off the inning with a walk, Maggie Finnegan went deep to left field to give the hosts a 2-0 edge.
- PSU extended its lead in the third inning with another home run. Maddie Gordon dished out a grand slam to left center putting the hosts up 6-0.
- Rutgers halved its deficit with three runs during its next at-bat. Kyleigh Sand led off the top of the fourth with a single to right and scored off a single up the middle by Morgan Smith. Maddie Lawson delivered a single thru the left side to score Smith. Katie Wingert added another Scarlet Knight to the bases with a single thru the infield into center setting up an RBI for Taylor Fawcett off her base hit to center scoring pinch runner Lilly Orozco.
- The Nittany Lions tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning on an Emily Maddox double to the warning track in right.
The Scarlet Knights return home to the Rutgers softball complex to host a three-game series against Indiana on April 21-23. On Saturday, April 22, RU will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX on Letterwinner Day. Admission to all games is free.
