Rowing Heads to Florida for Big Ten Invitational
Apr 06 | Women's Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – Rutgers rowing heads to the Sunshine State for the 3rd annual Big Ten Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 7-8 at Nathan Benderson Park. Flighted racing for Rutgers begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, the first of 21 races for the Scarlet Knights in Florida.
The Scarlet Knights, receiving votes in this week's CRCA Top 20 poll, are one of fifteen teams in the 16-team field with a CRCA national ranking or receiving votes in the poll heading into the weekend. All eight Big Ten Conference programs will be in attendance - RV Iowa, No. 20 Indiana, No. 13 Michigan, RV Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 11 Ohio State, RV Rutgers, and RV Wisconsin - and will join No. 19 Alabama, No. 6 Brown, No. 12 Duke, No. 15 SMU, No. 2 Stanford, No. 18 Tennessee, RV UCF and No. 7 UCLA.
The Big Ten Invitational will be contested through three sessions: a morning and afternoon session on Friday, and a morning session on Saturday. Seventy-two races are on the docket at Nathan Benderson Park, which features the 2,000-meter course that hosted last year's NCAA Championships, where Rutgers finished 13th in the nation by compiling 64 team points at the national regatta behind a ninth-place finish from the Varsity 4 boat and 13th-place results from the Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8.
All three of Rutgers' NCAA boats outperformed their seeding heading into the national regatta last season, which had the Varsity 8 at 16th, and the 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 at 15th. The Scarlet Knights earned one of 11 at-large bids to the NCAA Championships after a second consecutive third-place performance at the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis. Rutgers matched its best conference championships finish in third place while earning a program-record six medals, including its first gold with the 2nd Novice 8 winning their race against the Big Ten competition.
The 2023 Rutgers squad returns nine rowers from the NCAA boats, including Second Team All-America selection Hannah Heideveld, who also represented United States Rowing by winning a goal medal with the women's eight at the World Under 23 Championships last summer. RU also returns junior coxswain Emily Mahaffy, a 2021 Second-Team All-American as a freshman.
