PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men's basketball program is providing its student-athletes with a once-in-a-lifetime foreign experience this August.
Beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 8, and concluding on Saturday, August 19th, the Scarlet Knights will take a three-city foreign tour that consists of stays in Dakar, Senegal, Algarve, Portugal, and Lisbon, Portugal.
Dakar, the capital of Senegal is one of the chief seaports on the West African Coast. Algarve is located on the southern coastline of Portugal and is a region of beaches and fishing towns. Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and the largest city in the country.
Rutgers will be one of a handful of college basketball teams to ever take their program to the region in West Africa. The 11-day international trip consists of three days in Dakar, followed by four days in each of the Portugal cities. The tour will consist of many exhibition games for the Scarlet Knights basketball team against local and national basketball clubs at each stop.
"We are excited to give our student-athletes this once-in-a-lifetime experience," head coach Steve Pikiell said. "This foreign tour will give our team the opportunity to prepare for the challenge of the upcoming season against great international competition, as well as proving an unbelievable cultural experience of three great cities."
The program will also get the opportunity to take in the cultural experience of each of the three cities. From Aug. 9-13th the team will stay in Dakar, Senegal. Plans include a city tour, and visits to Goree Island, Bandia Safari Wildlife Park, and Pink Lake.
In Algarve, Portugal from August 13-16th, the team will be taking part in local sightseeing, including a catamaran and kayak tour of the beach town.
From August 16-19th the Scarlet Knights will be in Lisbon, Portugal. Sightseeing in Lisbon will include a Belem Bike Tour with a Belem Tower entry as well as a tour of the Palacio Nacional.
