PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Jim Valvano will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2023 Class during events on August 11-12.
Valvano is a graduate of Rutgers College in 1967 and was a co-captain with Scarlet Knight 2
nd all-time in scoring, Bob Lloyd. In the 1966-67 season, Jimmy V was part of a team that went 22-7 and was the first Rutgers men's basketball team to appear in a postseason tournament. Valvano was labeled the Rutgers Senior Athlete of the Year, scoring 1,222 points in three seasons which is 31
st all-time.

Jimmy V's career-high in scoring came against Rice on December 30
th, 1965, where he notched 38 points. Valvano was a recipient of the Rutgers Medal of Honor in 1983 and was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Fame in 1993. Valvano is tied for second all-time in single-game field goal percentage at Rutgers as a player with .909 against Lafayette on January 30
th, 1965.
After his playing career, Jimmy V returned to Piscataway as an assistant coach from 1967-1969. His infectious and charismatic personality attracted Johns Hopkins to hire Valvano as head coach for a season in 1969-70. Valvano's coaching journey continued to Connecticut as an assistant (1970-72), Bucknell (1972-1975), and Iona (1975-80), before his most memorable seasons at North Carolina State (1980-90).
He won the NCAA Championship in 1983 for N.C. State and advanced to a pair of Elite Eights in 1985 and 1986. After his coaching career, Valvano joined ABC and ESPN as a sportscaster, where his national attention grew. His most memorable moment, came at the 1993 ESPY Awards, as the V Foundation was established for Cancer Research and he gave one of the greatest speeches of all-time.
The full Hall of Fame class was announced during the NCAA Final Four on April 1 in Houston, Texas.
The 2023 class will be officially enshrined during festivities in Springfield, Massachusetts, August 11-12.
