PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 7 Rutgers field hockey is off to the best start in program history, with an 8-0 record. The Scarlet Knights are back on the road for the eighth time in nine games, traveling to face No. 18 UMass on Sunday. The game will start at 1 p.m., and stream on ESPN+.
With a victory, Rutgers would claim their fourth ranked win of the season. It would match the program's record for road wins in the season (previously done in 1993). Rutgers has climbed from ranked 16th in the preseason to number seven just three polls later, their highest ranking since the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation following its Big Ten Tournament Championship in 2021.
RU is 3-0 against ranked teams this season. All have been on the road and all three have gone past the first overtime (two wins in double overtime - No. 12 Penn State, No. 15 Princeton, one in a penalty shootout - No. 15 UConn). A win over No. 18 UMass would be RU's fourth ranked win of the season and ninth ranked win over the past two seasons,
Guillermina Causarano and Puck Winter share the team lead with 14 points per game. Causarano, with six assists, is eighth nationally in assists per game.
Goalkeeper Sophia Howard is the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and was an Honorable Mention selection towards the national defensive player of the week award. She currently ranks third nationally with a .848 save percentage and fourth nationally with a goals-against-average of 0.57. Also on the defensive end, Puck Winter is third nationally with three defensive saves.
The Scarlet Knights as a team are second nationally in save percentage (0.861), fourth in shutouts per game and goals against average, and eighth in defensive saves. Only RU and Iowa remain undefeated on the season.
UMass is 5-3 on the season. Five players have scored two or three goals this season. UMass goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen has a 1.66 goals-against-average and .688 save percentage.
UMass has won all 14 meetings in the series, as RU is 0-13-1 against them. They last played in 2007 and only once since 1994.
