Scarlet Knights pick up their first Big Ten win of the season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's soccer (5-4-2, 1-2-0) used a second-minute Emily Mason marker and held on for a 1-0 victory over Purdue (3-7-1, 0-2-1) for its first Big Ten win of the season on a drenched Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field.

SCORING SUMMARY

It took just 82 seconds for Rutgers to take an early advantage with Riley Tiernan at the corner spot. Her well-placed service found Emily Mason on the far side of the Purdue 18-yard box, where the defender collected and fired off the inside of the near post for her first tally of the 2023 season.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Olivia Bodmer's six-save shutout started in the 15th minute when she turned away a Lauren Omholt attempt heading inside the near post with a diving stop.
Bodmer's best highlight of the day to preserve the clean sheet came in the 71st minute as Zoie Allen fired from 25 yards out toward the upper-right 90, but Bodmer sprawled for save to keep the Boilermakers off the board.
Allison Lowrey missed an insurance goal by inches as a shot past the Purdue keeper dribbled off the post and back into play before it was scooped up by the goalie.

Purdue outshot Rutgers, 19-10, overall and 6-4 in shots on goal.
Bodmer's six saves were the second-most of the season for the redshirt freshman keeper.
Sam Kroeger, Gia Vicari and Sara Brocious offered Rutgers' other shots on target after Mason's goal.
Both sides combined for 14 corner kicks with seven apiece.
Allison Lynch, Mason, and Kassidy Banks all put in the 90-minute effort in Rutgers' sixth shutout of the season.

All five of Rutgers' wins this season have come via shutout. The victory over Purdue marks the third 1-0 win of 2023.

Riley Tiernan recorded her 50th collegiate point with her 20th career assist, moving into a seventh-place tie all-time at Rutgers with Nicole Whitley (2016-18). Tiernan is nine assists away from tying the program record of 29 career assists set by Gina DeMaio from 2006-10.
Rutgers is 6-0-1 in the all-time series against Purdue. Five of the last six meetings took place in Piscataway, where the Scarlet Knights are 4-0-0.
