Field Hockey Drops Game at No. 5 Michigan

RU Falls While Playing 5th Game over Past Six Against Ranked Foes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Rutgers field hockey played its third straight road game on Friday afternoon, hitting the road to take on the No. 5 team in the nation. Facing the nation's leader in goals per game, RU dropped a 4-0 contest to Michigan. With the result, the Wolverines improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in league play and dropping RU to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten.

Michigan got on the scoreboard first, with under five minutes left in the first half. The Wolverines played the ball from the left corner into the circle and worked it to an open player in front for the finish, and a 1-0 lead for the hosts.

That score held into halftime, but halfway through the third quarter, UM added to their ledger. The Wolverines' Abby Tamer carried the ball through the midfield and into the circle, putting home a hard shot for her ninth goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Michigan added another tally, capitalizing on a corner play for a tip-in at the post and a 3-0 lead. Another corner for UM just two minutes later extended the lead to 4-0. Michigan used advantages on shots (16-5) and corners (6-2) to secure the win.

The game concluded a three-game road swing in league play, after playing at Northwestern and Indiana last weekend. It was RU's last road Big Ten game during the regular season, with the final three Big Ten games all at home. The matchup against No. 5 Michigan was the team's sixth ranked matchup in the first 11 games, and the fifth in the past six games. RU also has ranked matchups coming up with No. 4 Ohio State (Oct. 20) and No. 17 Penn State (Oct. 25). Three of RU's four Big Ten losses have come to teams ranked in the top-seven nationally.
