Softball Falls In Extra Innings To Nevada

FRESNO, Calif. – Rutgers softball came back from a 3-0 deficit and took a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, but Nevada topped the Scarlet Knights after a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-4 win.

The extra innings setback in the first of two meetings with Nevada at the Bulldog Invitational dropped RU to 14-8 on the season.

Nevada 6, Rutgers 4 (9 inn.)

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
  • Kyleigh Sand went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and run scored. Her triple moved her into a tie for eighth on Rutgers' career triples leaders list with six.
  • Morgan Smith, who started the game inside the circle, and Payton Lincavage also scored runs. Smith's run tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth and Lincavage's run put RU up 4-3 in the top of the ninth.
  • Smith and Mattie Boyd combined for five strikeouts. Boyd dropped to 7-4 in the loss.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Nevada put up three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third, the Wolf Pack's M. Olsen singled to put her squad up on the scoreboard and two batters later B. Clark tripled to right field to plate two runs for the 3-0 edge.
  • Rutgers responded with their at-bat in the top of the third. Kyleigh Sand tripled to right field scoring Maddie Lawson for the Scarlet Knights' first run of the inning. Sand then scored to reduce RU's to one. LA Matthews flew out to left and the Wolf Pack defense toyed with Sand in trying to keep the speedy Scarlet Knight at third, but she ultimately got by for RU to trail 3-2.
  • The Scarlet Knights had a chance at a tying run in the fifth. Sand collected a base hit to left and pinch runner Bailey Briggs tried for an extra base to knot the score but was caught at the plate.
RU did tie the game, however, in the top of the sixth. With Scarlet Knights on second and third, pinch hitter Lauren Punk hit the ball to short. Instead of out number three, the shortstop bobbled the ball scoring Smith for a 3-3 tie.
  • The Scarlet Knights went to extra innings for the second-straight game and went up by a run in the top of the ninth. Payton Lincavage started off the inning on second base and advanced on a ground out to third by Jillian Anderson. Kayla Bock followed grounding out to first, but got the RBI as Lincavage crossed the plate to put RU up 4-3.
  • Two were aboard for the Wolf Pack's Aaliyah Jenkins to go over the left field fence for the Nevada victory.
