No. 13 Rowing Travels to Florida for Big Ten Invitational

SARASOTA, Fla. – No. 13 Rutgers rowing heads to the Sunshine State for the 4th annual Big Ten Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 at Nathan Benderson Park. Flighted racing for Rutgers begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, the first of 21 races for the Scarlet Knights in Florida.
The Scarlet Knights, ranked No. 13 this week in the CRCA National Poll, are one of 13 teams in the 18-team field with a CRCA national ranking or receiving votes in the poll heading into the weekend. All eight Big Ten Conference programs will be in attendance - RV Iowa, No. 16 Indiana, No. 9 Michigan, Michigan State, RV Minnesota, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 13 Rutgers, and Wisconsin - and will join RV Alabama, No. 6 Brown, Clemson, No. 14 Duke, RV Notre Dame, Oklahoma, SMU, No. 15 Tennessee, RV UCF and RV UCLA.
The Big Ten Invitational will be contested through three sessions: a morning and afternoon session on Friday, and a morning session on Saturday. Seventy-two races are on the docket at Nathan Benderson Park, which features the 2,000-meter course that hosted previous NCAA Championships.
LAST TIME OUT
The Scarlet Knights won five of its seven races on Day 1 of the Ivy League Invitational on Friday on Lake Carnegie. The Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 4, and Novice 8 boats all claimed victory in their races against RV Columbia and Dartmouth. The V8, 2V8, 2V4, and N8 all finished with open water ahead of the second-place finishers.The 3rd Varsity 4B boat added the Scarlet Knights' sixth race victory of the weekend, beating No. 6 Brown in the final race of the second day.
B1G BOAT
The Second Varsity 4 was named the Big Ten Boat of the Week for its performance at the Big Ten/Ivy League Dust Up on Saturday, March 23 on the Cooper River in South Jersey. It marked the first Boat of the Week honor of the season for the Scarlet Knights, and the ninth for the program since its first appearance in the conference's weekly awards in 2018. The RU boat beat out the competition from No. 8 Penn and No. 19 Harvard to win its race in Session II of the event. The Scarlet Knights crossed by 18.5 seconds in front of third-place No. 8 Penn, and with a bit of open water (4.7 seconds) ahead of second-place No. 19 Harvard. In the morning session, the boat finished with open water ahead of No. 11 Ohio State, only behind No. 5 Yale.
RETURNING EXPERIENCE
Rutgers returns 14 of the 23 athletes that competed in the three NCAA Championships boats in 2023, when RU placed 15th in the country with all three boats racing to second-place finishes in the C finals (14th overall). Among the returners is a member of the inaugural CRCA Athletes to Watch list, junior coxswain Victoria Grieder.
