Men's Golf Finishes Seventh at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rutgers men's golf finishes the weekend at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio in a seventh-place tie out of 14 teams.

The team's result of a seventh-place tied with Wisconsin and Nebraska marked their highest placement since a sixth-place finish in 2019.

Round 3 – Sunday, April 28th

The Scarlet Knights maintained their position on day three of play at the Big Ten Championships. They finish in the top half of teams for just the second time since joining the Big Ten.

"Scioto was just an incredible venue to host the Big Ten Championship," Coach Rob Shutte said about the course. "It played as hard as a Big Ten Championship that we've had on record between the wind, the firmness, the rough length, the pins and the tees. When you look at the field average, I think around 18-over par for the three days, that's kind of where all five of our guys ended up finishing in the in the mid-30s there. I think that we knew the game plan going in, staying below the hole and how important putting is and speed control on the green is. I think that proved to be the area where if we were a little bit better, we could have gotten up in there in the top five."

Luke Wells, Weston Jones, and Martin Leon all tied for 33rd place, closely followed by Xavier Marcoux and Rhett Sellers in 39th. This is the first time in program history that all five Rutgers golfers placed in the top 40 at the Big Ten Championships.

"I think out of all the biggest championships I've played at; it was definitely the hardest," co-caption Xavier Marcoux said about the event. "It was like getting beat up every single shot you hit. There was no being comfortable out there. You just had to be and if you weren't on, you'd get punished pretty quickly. I felt like you guys hung in there pretty well. I think we all kind of hung in there. It was so tough. It's hard to describe. Par wasn't even an accurate description of how well you played golf out there. It was such a different kind of test that a lot of the guys hadn't seen before. It was good though. I think we would have liked to finish a little higher and probably make a little less errors, but out there that course is going to make you make errors. Overall, I think we hung in there pretty well.

Martin Leon led all participants this weekend with 38 pars over the 54 holes. Leon rose 16 spots shooting 4-over, the 11th lowest score of the day.

Weston Jones had two birdies in round three, and tied for seventh among the field with 8 birdies this weekend.

Round 2 – Saturday, April 27th

The Scarlet Knights moved into the top half of teams today sitting at seventh in the tournament. This would be their highest finish at the Big Ten Championships since 2019 when they finished sixth.

Luke Wells continued his impressive showing this weekend shooting 4-over, tied for the eighth best score of the day. He is currently tied for 13th, just six strokes off the lead.

Rhett Sellers moved up 17 spots today into a tie for 33rd place out of 70 golfers. He had 11 pars and one birdie.

Martin Leon leads the team and is fourth in the tournament with 24 pars over the two days. He had 12 of them today.

Weston Jones had three birdies once again leading the team. He is tied for seventh among the field for birdies this weekend.

Martin Leon tees off for Rutgers to start the final round of play at 8:00 AM.

Round 1 – Friday, April 26th

5th-year co-captains Xavier Marcoux and Luke Wells lead the way for the Scarlet Knights in their last Big Ten Championships. They are both tied for 14th place shooting 2-over for the day.

In a tight race among the middle of the leaderboard, eight teams are separated by just four strokes. Rutgers is right there and still within striking distance to grab that automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament.

Wells, who grew up less than one hour away from Scioto Country Club, started the day off hot with a birdie before rattling off nine straight pars. He led the team with 13 pars on the day.

Weston Jones in his third Big Ten Championships is tied for 23rd place out of a field of 70 golfers. He led the team with three birdies on the day.

Rhett Sellers will tee off on hole one at 9:00 AM to start round two for the Scarlet Knights.
