Women's Basketball and Men's Soccer Volunteer at America's Grow-a-Row

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – On Monday, members of both the Rutgers women’s basketball and men’s soccer teams gave back to their community through America’s Grow-a-Row. The teams traveled to one of the organization’s farms in Pittstown, New Jersey for a full day in the fields picking thousands of pounds of fresh corn to help those experiencing food insecurity.

Both squads came together to pick nine bins of corn, coming out to over 6,700 pounds and approximately 27,000 individual servings.

“Coming to Grow-a-Row is always a positive experience,” said men’s soccer defender Aidan Flynn. “The opportunity to help so many people while being able to spend time as a team in a more unique setting is invaluable to our program and the community we’re able to help.”

“I think many people underestimate the hard work that goes into farming crops,” said women’s basketball forward JoJo Lacey. “The value of doing this amazing job should be praised more often. It was a long process but very satisfying once you realize how many families you are providing for. Thank you, Grow-a-Row, for the opportunity to help!”

Grow-a-Row's mission is to positively impact as many lives as possible through a volunteer effort of planting, picking, rescuing and delivering free fresh produce. The organization provides fresh, healthy produce to those experiencing food insecurity, educates people of all generations about hunger and ways to help introduce youth to farming and healthy eating.

Grow-a-Row impacts over 40,000 individuals annually, donating over 4.1 million servings to all 21 New Jersey counties in addition to 22 total states nationwide.

“Doing community service in the fields harvesting corn was an incredibly enriching experience,” said women's basketball guard Mya Petticord. “The physical labor gave me a profound appreciation for the hard work behind our food. Working alongside diverse volunteers fostered a strong sense of community and camaraderie, making the long hours enjoyable and meaningful. This experience taught me valuable lessons about resilience, perseverance and the importance of supporting local agriculture. Overall, it deepened my understanding of community, hard work and the impact of our choices on the environment.”

Grow-a-Row owns and operates four farms in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and produces farm fresh produce which is dispersed to their regional partners. The Scarlet Knights’ harvest will be donated to local organizations such as Feeding America, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and City Harvest in New York City.

The men’s soccer team also participated in the volunteer opportunity last year, harvesting over 15,000 pounds of eggplant in August of 2023.

“Being able to harvest around 6,500 pounds of corn for families that need it feels great,” men’s soccer defender Sawyer Koza said. “The community has always supported us so being able to give back to them is a gesture that feels really good.”
