PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football LB
Tyreem Powell claimed a spot on the 2024 Comeback Player of the Year watch list jointly released today by College Sports Communicators, The Associated Press and Fiesta Bowl Organization. Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness or other circumstances.
Heading into his fifth season with the Scarlet Knights, Powell had 2023 cut short after eight games following an injury in the win at Indiana. At the time, he led the defense with 53 tackles, including a career-high 11 stops versus Virginia Tech. The linebacker contributed sacks against Northwestern and Michigan.
In the offseason, Powell suffered a separate injury and has been working his way back to be ready for the 2024 season.
Overall, the Vineland, New Jersey, native has played in 33 collegiate games with 22 starts, totaling 144 tackles with eight for loss and five sacks, adding eight passes defended (seven breakups, one interception) and a forced fumble. Powell is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was previously named to the Shrine Bowl 1000 and preseason All-Big Ten (third team) by
Lindy's Sports.
