Goal in final minute of regulation lifts Huskies past Scarlet Knights

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 9 Rutgers field hockey battled throughout against a perennially stout squad in UConn in a home contest on Sunday afternoon. Ultimately, a goal in the final minute of regulation lifted the Huskies to a 2-1 victory.

Rutgers' lone goal came from Vicky Jure, with countrywoman Guillermina Causarano providing the assist. Sophia Howard had five saves for RU while Puck Winter had two defensive saves. Overall, shots were dead even at 11-11, while RU had a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The game was scoreless into halftime. Each side had four shots apiece but neither squad could break the deadlock. In the third quarter, the visitors struck first, capitalizing on a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute.

Just over seven minutes later, RU answered back with a quality tally. Guillermina Causarano carried the ball into the circle, and sent a pass to Jure to the goalkeeper's left. Jure found space and launched home an equalizer.

The 1-1 tie would stand until the final minute of regulation. The Huskies again capitalized after being awarded a penalty corner. Sol Simone got the ball free in front of the cage and lifted it into the goal for a 2-1 advantage.

RU would not wilt, battling to the very end. In the final seven seconds, the home squad earned two penalty corners, pressing for an equalizer, but just could not convert.

The Scarlet Knights split a 1-1 weekend of one-goal games, standing a 2-1 overall after a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Monmouth Friday that followed the opening weekend 5-0 win over Vermont. UConn improved to 4-0 with the win in earning their second ranked win of the year.

Vicky Jure scored two goals on the weekend after being without a goal through the first 39 games of her career.

Puck WInter, who shared the nation's lead with 12 defensive saves last season, has three defensive saves through three games.
The last four games against UConn have been decided by one goal, with RU having previously taken the past three.
