CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Rutgers women's soccer lost at Illinois by a score of 2-0 on Thursday night at Demirjian Park.
The Scarlet Knights (3-5-4, 1-5-1) were unable to overcome a pair of late first half goals by the Fighting Illini (11-2-1, 4-2-1).Â
RU was able to come out strong with a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes, but could not find the back of the net.Â
The rest of the first half saw back-and-forth action, with the Scarlet Knights putting three shots on frame and forcing saves from the Illini keeper. In the 39th minute, a through ball from Illinois found an attacker for the opening goal. Just 27 seconds later, a foul in the box gave the Fighting Illini a penalty kick, which they converted to take a 2-0 advantage at the half.Â
Rutgers kept up its offensive pressure in the second half, creating a litany of chances. The Scarlet Knights totaled seven shots on goal in the second half, but all were saved as Illinois was able to preserve the shutout.Â
In total, RU had 10 shots on goal, including seven from
Ashley Baran.
Olivia Bodmer made another four saves in net, bringing her career total to 199. Â
Rutgers wraps up its weekend road trip with a Sunday matinee at Northwestern set for 2 p.m.Â
