Third Set Rally Falls Short As RV UCLA Bests Volleyball

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Rutgers volleyball made a late third-set run featuring a string of eight unanswered points to take a 22-18 edge, but host UCLA came back for the sweep on Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins, who are receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Poll, bested the Scarlet Knights, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.

STANDOUT STATS
  • Junior Zora Hardison swung .381 with 10 kills to go along with four blocks.
  • Sophomore Lily Bolen collected her fourth-straight double-double, 10th of the season and 12th of her career. With her 27 assists and team-leading 10 digs, Bolen now has the most double-doubles in a season since 2021. Bolen also moved into fifth on the rally-era career leaders list with 1,257 helpers and is now 26 assists away from 1,000 on the year.
  • Bolen and freshman Kaila Kalama-Bajet also had an ace each.
KEY MOMENTS
  • SET 1 (18-21) | While UCLA went up by five with an 11-6 edge, Rutgers drew within a pair midway through the opening frame. A Zora Hardison touch resulting in the ball hitting the floor just over the block and inside the right line saw RU trail 15-13, a Lily Bolen dump set had the Knights down 17-15 and an errant serve from the Bruins kept Rutgers close behind 18-16. ULCA took the next three points during a 7-2 run to close to take the set and finished connecting on the attack at a .455 clip. Hardison had five successful swings on seven attacks and ended the opening stanza hitting .714.
  • SET 2 (16-28) | Rutgers went in front 7-6 and had answers when UCLA came back to tie the match twice. After Tara Garvey gave RU its first lead of the night, she swung again for the Scarlet Knights to lead 8-7. While the Bruins recaptured the lead at 9-8, the match was evened on a UCLA service error on the following play and an Imani Howell attack down the middle at 10-10. The Bruins, though, took a 5-1 run into the media timeout and continued to grow their advantage.
  • SET 3 (23-25) | The Scarlet Knights' comeback in set three fell just short. The Bruins led by as many as five and held another 15-11 edge at the media timeout, but from there, Rutgers regrouped. The Scarlet Knights went on an 11-2 run, including a burst of seven unanswered, prompting UCLA to call time with RU ahead 20-17. Out of the break, Hardison swung to go into double-digit kills for the night, extending the Bruins' drought to eight straight. Hardison and Bolen teamed up at the net for the Scarlet Knights to go up 22-18, but UCLA came back with a burst of five straight, ultimately closing on a 7-1 run for the win.
