
Men's Basketball Mourns Kevin Black

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men's basketball program mourns the passing of Kevin Black.
Black was a standout forward for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's basketball team from 1979 to 1983. Standing 6 feet 6 inches and weighing 185 pounds, he hailed from Mackin High School in Washington, D.C. In high school, Black was one of the top players in the state and averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds as a senior leading his team to a 26-5 record.
During his freshman year in the 1979–80 season, Black made an immediate impact, starting in 27 of 28 games played averaging 10.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. As a sophomore Black averaged 9.3 points per game and shot a stellar 55 percent from the field. As a junior Black was the third-leading scorer on the team in 1981-82, scoring 277 points and averaging 9.2 points per game. His 160 rebounds were second on the squad as were his 53.8 shooting percentage. Over his collegiate career, he amassed a total of 1,231 points, placing him 24th on the Rutgers' all-time scoring list.
In his senior year, the 1982–83 season, Black served as a key player for a team with a 23–8 record and secured an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. He averaged 12.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. The Scarlet Knights advanced to the second round before falling to St. John's.
Following his collegiate career, Black was selected by the New Jersey Nets in the 9th round of the 1983 NBA Draft, with the 201st overall pick. Kevin Black's contributions during a successful era for Rutgers basketball have left a legacy in the program's history.
