PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers field hockey alumn Lucy Bannatyne was named to play for her country. Bannatyne was selected for the Team New Zealand A squad for the Women's Summer of Hockey event.
Bannatyne was one of 20 women named to the New Zealand A roster ahead of the event. The team will be joined by three international sides: the United States, Japan, and the Vantage Black Sticks in the international tournament. Competition will take place from Wednesday, January 21 to Sunday, January 25. New Zealand will play each other squad in a round robin format on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the championship game and third place game taking place on Sunday.
Bannatyne spent four years 'On the Banks' from 2021 to 2024. In that time, playing both midfield and forward, she appeared in 75 career games, starting 69 of them. She scored 13 goals and added 11 assists, with four game-winning goals.
The native of Auckland, New Zealand was a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, two-time NFHC Academic Squad selection, and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. She was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team in 2023 after scoring a goal in the Semifinals. In 2022, she was a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch and NFHCA Collegiate Watch List member after scoring eight goals as a freshman, the first eight-goal season for a Scarlet Knight freshman since joining the Big Ten Conference.
She was a key piece of two NCAA Tournament squads for RU (2021 and 2023). In NCAA Tournament play, she had three points (goal in NCAA win over Delaware in 2021, assist against Harvard in 2023).
Bannatyne joins a growing list of Scarlet Knight alumns to play for their country in international competition. Sofia Walia was recently named to a Team Canada roster, while Katie Larmour plays for Team Ireland.
