Softball Falls To LMU & Utah On Day Two Of Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Rutgers softball fell to LMU and Utah on day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday night.
RU dropped game one, 7-0, to the Lions, while the Utes came back to take game two, handing the Scarlet Knights a 3-2 loss
The two losses dropped Rutgers to 6-7 on the season.

| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- The Scarlet Knights got hits from sophomores Hailey Stripling and Addie Osborne and junior Sam Rohwer.
- In the circle, sophomore Kassandra Gewecke got the start. She gave up three runs on four hits and struck out seven. She dropped to 2-2. Junior Brooke Shifflett pitched the final two innings of action.
| THE RUNDOWN |
- A double, a wild pitch and a walk had LMU on the corners to start off the second inning, leading to a two-run double down the right field line for Scarlett Carlson.
- Rutgers thwarted a run at home in the bottom of the fourth with third baseman Addie Osborne connecting with catcher Paige Schuettler. LMU, however, managed a run off a passed ball to follow the inning for a 3-0 edge.
- The Lions led off the fifth with a trio of singles. On Sydney Poole's base hit to left, a miscue gave Avery Francis the opening to come home and extend LMU's lead to 4-0.
- LMU loaded the bases in the sixth with no outs. With the bounce to the circle, Brooke Shifflett in the circle triggered the double play at home and first, leaving the Lion's Mya Allen on third. Taelor Walker sent her in on a double thru the left side and scored on a bad throw to first on the following at-bat.

| STATISTICALLY SPEAKING |
- Sophomore Riley Hwang was 2-for-2 with her first home run of the season and second of her career.
- Classmate Addie Osborne plated RU's other run.
- Sophomore Kelsey Hoesktra started in the circle, going 4.0 innings and giving up a pair of hits with a pair of strikeouts. Kassandra Gewecke dropped to 2-3 on the year, allowing three runs on two hits with one Ute down on strikes. Freshman Marley Caldwell picked up an inning's worth of work, fanning two.
| THE RUNDOWN |
- Wild fielding allowed Rutgers to get on the board in the top of the first. Jayla Fuller was hit by a pitch and Hailey Stripling reached on a fielding miscue at first. Addie Osborne hit the ball to third, with the Utes stopping Fuller at third, but in the attempt for the double play misfired to first and into the outfield. Utah, however, was able to get the ball back in for the play at the plate and stop Stripling from scoring. Kelsey Hoekstra followed and it was another error at first, but this time Osborne plated on the miscue for the early 1-0 RU lead.
- Riley Hwang gave the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 edge in the fifth with a solo shot to deep center.
- Utah, however, responded by taking the lead in the bottom half. A pair of walks put two aboard for the Utes and Kennedy Proctor tripled down the right field line to knot the score at 2-2. Mia Gomez followed up with an RBI single up the middle for the 3-2 Utah lead.
- With two outs in the seventh, Rutgers had the tying and go-ahead run on base. Hwang walked and Jayla Fuller was hit by a pitch and both advanced on a wild pitch. The Utes would close the game leaving the Scarlet Knight pair stranded.
