Women's Lacrosse Loses Close Matchup with No. 8 Johns Hopkins

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse (5-4, 0-1) lost a back-and-forth matchup with No. 8 Johns Hopkins (8-1, 1-0), 15-12, on Sunday at SHI Stadium. The Scarlet Knights once again held a lead in the third quarter, but the Blue Jays closed the afternoon with a 6-2 scoring run to secure the win in both program's Big Ten Conference openers.
Rutgers outshot JHU 30-28 and earned a 19-10 advantage on the restart thanks to senior Katie Buck, who reset her single-game program record with 15 draw controls. Buck added three caused turnovers, while sophomore Bianca Chiarella caused a game-high four turnovers in the loss.
Senior Lily Dixon became the first student-athlete in program history to hit 100 career assists thanks to her four helpers on the day. Rookie Kate Theofield netted a career-high six goals and added an assist for a season-best seven points. Sophomore Caroline Ling also contributed seven points on four assists and three goals.
Johns Hopkins opened the afternoon with a 3-0 scoring run before Rutgers responded with back-to-back goals. Dixon found Ling at the 8:18 mark, while Ling returned the favor to sophomore Delainey Sutley to make it a one-goal game with 4:41 left in the quarter. The Blue Jays added two more for a 5-2 lead after one.
The Scarlet Knights responded in the second quarter, using a 5-0 scoring run to take its first lead of the day. Theofield netted three consecutive goals during the stretch, while Dixon found junior Payton Tini with 6:36 left in the half to make it 7-6 RU. Johns Hopkins closed the quarter with three straight for a 9-7 lead at halftime.
Rutgers tallied another scoring run out of the midpoint, with Ling finding Theofield to give the Scarlet Knights back their lead with 9:06 left on the third quarter clock.
The Blue Jays began to take charge down the stretch, closing the day with a 6-2 scoring run across two quarters of play. RU got to within two goals thanks to Theofield's sixth of the day off a pass from classmate Stella D'Ambro, but back-to-back goals from the visitors proved to be the difference in a 15-12 final.
