Messina Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Freshman Annalise Messina from Rutgers women's lacrosse was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office. The rookie contributed two goals, including the game-winning score with seconds remaining, to help the Scarlet Knights to a 9-8 win at No. 25 Ohio State last Thursday in Columbus.
It marks the second consecutive week RU has produced a Big Ten Freshman of the Week winner after Kate Theofield earned conference laurels last Tuesday.
Messina finished with two goals, two draw controls, a caused turnover and ground ball against OSU. With three seconds left in regulation and the game tied 8-8, sophomore Caroline Ling found Messina, who finished top shelf for the game winner.
A native of Hatboro, Pennsylvania, Messina has started the first 10 games in the midfield and has produced eight points on seven goals and an assist to go along with 15 draw controls, six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Rutgers hits the West Coast for its next two games, beginning at USC on March 28 in Los Angeles. The matchup is set for a 6 p.m. ET national broadcast on Big Ten Network.
