Women's Soccer Wins Big Ten Opener at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – Rutgers women's soccer won its Big Ten opener at Oregon by a score of 1-0 on Thursday night at Papé Field.
True freshman Amanda Thornton scored the decisive goal in the 50th minute for the Scarlet Knights (2-1-3, 1-0-0), who put together a complete team effort to take down the Ducks (5-1-1, 0-1-0) on the West Coast.
Across 90 minutes, the Oregon attack was unable to find anything against the RU defense and goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer, who set a career high with 10 saves. Bodmer picked up her third shutout of the season and 24th of her career. All through the night, she was up to the task on every Ducks shot and took control of the box, intervening at key moments on crosses and long balls.
After a scoreless first half, the Scarlet Knights came out of the locker room asking all the questions and drew a pair of free kicks inside Oregon territory. On the second of their set pieces, Lilia Calvert's service into the box bounced around and found the feet of Thornton, who drove a low, curling shot through traffic into the corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.
RU continued to press and look to extend the lead, but was unable to find a second goal, settling into a defensive battle. Lindsey Hailey made a crucial tackle on a breakaway in the second half, while Bodmer made six of her 10 saves in the final 45.
Rutgers is back in action on Sunday at 4 p.m. at No. 12 Washington, with the match airing live on the Big Ten Network.
