Maddy Sposito has been an assistant coach at Rutgers since joining the staff originally in 2015 as a volunteer assistant coach. She spent two years in that role before being promoted to assistant coach in 2017. In Sposito's time on the Rutgers staff, RU has compiled 76 wins. Rutgers reached the NCAA Tournament twice in that time (2018 and 2021) and captured the Big Ten Tournament title in 2021, the first team at Rutgers to win a Big Ten Tournament title in any sport.
A former goalkeeper with experience at the collegiate and international levels, Sposito works closely with the team's goalkeepers. She has helped mentor goalkeeper Gianna Glatz, who has excelled in her career as the Scarlet Knights goalkeeper. Glatz has earned multiple All-American, All-Big Ten and All-Region honors, and was the 2021 Big Ten Co-Player of the Year.
Sposito holds USA Level II Accreditation and FIH Level III Accreditation. She is an Aspire Coach in the USA Junior Women's Program, focusing on goalkeeper training. She traveled with the US Junior Men's and Women's field hockey teams as a video analyst for the 2021 Junior Pan American Cup in Chile, assisting with both teams as they won a bronze medal in a shootout. She also served on the staff of Team USA as they played in South Africa at the 2023 Indoor World Cup.
The 2022 season saw five ranked wins. The slate was highlighted by a home win over No. 3 Northwestern, the defending national champions. RU also defeated No. 15 UConn, No. 19 James Madison, No. 23 Ohio State and No. 25 Monmouth. Iris Langejans was named First Team All-Big Ten, First Team All-Region, Third Team All-American, while Puck Winter was the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year and was a Second Team All-Region selection, as was Guillermina Causarano.
In the fall of 2021, the Scarlet Knights set program records for wins (19), ranked wins (13), top-10 wins (six) and Big Ten Conference wins (six). Rutgers won the Big Ten Tournament Championship for the first time, capturing three wins in four days on its home field. The victory marked the first Big Ten Tournament championship for any Rutgers athletics program. Following the Big Ten title, the Scarlet Knights entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll for the first time in program history. RU advanced to the Elite Eight with a First Round victory over No. 17 Delaware, the first NCAA Tournament victory for the program since 1986.
Following the season, Rutgers earned the Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year award. Sposito was recognized by Bolster Field Hockey as the 2021 Division I All-Star Team Goalkeeper Coach Award.
In the spring 2021 season, Rutgers posted a 9-5 regular season that include four top-10 ranked wins (two over No. 4 Northwestern and two over No. 9 Penn State). The team was ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation.
In 2019, Rutgers won 10 games with just 25 goals allowed across 18 games. In 2018, the program qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1986. Glatz led the team to nine shutouts, the third most in the nation. Rutgers was second in the nation in save percentage and seventh in goals-against-average. In 2017, the team spent eight weeks in the national rankings, finishing the year ranked No. 21 in the nation.
