Biography

Paul Mulcahy is a 6-6 pass-first point guard who arrived “On the Banks” with a winning reputation. The first New Jersey High School boys’ basketball player to average a triple-double in 26 years (1992-93; LaMarr Greer). Tenacious competitor with a very high basketball IQ who plays the game “The Right Way”. Mulcahy has grown into the ultimate floor general in his time with the Scarlet Knights.

A 2022-23 Big Ten Honorable Mention has had one of the best winning careers in Rutgers basketball history and is currently fourth all-time in school history in career assists (457 assists). He has scored 818 career points, has 457 rebounds and 112 career steals. Mulcahy has run the Scarlet Knights offense at the point guard position for the last two seasons and has shot a lethal 45.1 percent from the field in career (308-of-683). 

2022-23 (Senior):
  • Played in 30 games (28 starts) and averaged 8.3 points per game with 147 assists (4.9 apg), 46 steals and shot 41.6 percent from the field
  • Scored in double-figures 12 times 
  • Limited to 9 minutes vs. UMass Lowell and missed four games due to shoulder injury (Temple, Rider, CCSU, Miami). Team went 2-2 without him before he returned in win over No. 8/10 Indiana. 
  • In the win at No. 1 Purdue, Mulcahy was the first RU player to ever post at least 16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in a Big Ten win. No RU player in the past 12 seasons had reached that 16/8/6/4 statline with zero turnovers. 
    • Prior to Mulcahy, no Big Ten player had recorded a 16/8/6/4/0 line since at least the 2010-11 season.
    • Only 10 players had reached that line in the past 12 seasons prior to Mulcahy and Mulcahy was the first in that span to do so playing against a Power 5 school, as well as the first to do so in that span in a road win. 
  • Honored at the annual Chancellor-Provost's Student Leadership Awards Gala with the 2023 Paul Robeson Renaissance Award. 

2021-22 (Junior):
  • Honored as a 2021-22 Big Ten Honorable Mention.
  • Has spent three seasons at Rutgers, playing in 89 games with 51 starts. 
  • Had a career-high 31 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in loss to NW. First Scarlet Knight with over 30 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists since Corey Sanders in Feb. of 2016.
  • Posted career-high 12 assists vs. MSU for first career double-double.
  • Mulcahy led the Big Ten in conference play in assists (111 and 5.85 per game). 
  • Mulcahy averaged 5.3 assists per game overall. The last Rutgers player to average more assists over a full season was Brian Ellerbe when he dished out 6.2 per game during the 1984-1985 season.
  • Averaged career-bests with 9.0 points-per-game, 4.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists-per-game.
  • Started Grateful4 Foundation in the offseason, inspiring others to focus on gratitude

2020-21 (Sophomore): 
  • Played in 28 games (21 starts), averaging 5.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists
  • Second on team in assists with 81 assists 
  • Has six games of at least five assists 
  • Scored in double-figures three times 
  • Rutgers’ Male recipient of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award 
  • Scored 15 points and had seven assists in the season-opening win over Sacred Heart (Nov. 25)
  • Made first career start in win over FDU (Nov. 27), collecting eight rebounds and four assists
  • Had career-high nine rebounds with seven assists in win over Hofstra (Nov. 29)
  • Posted 11 points in win over Purdue (Dec. 29), making three three-pointers
  • Scored 10 points in Big Ten Tournament win over Indiana (March 11)
2019-20 (Freshman):
  • Played in all 31 games off the bench, averaging 3.7 points and 2.5 rebounds on 54.0 percent shooting from the field. Was second on the team with 61 assists and had 12 steals and nine blocks.
  • Assist to turnover ratio of 2.17 ranked sixth compared to Big Ten qualified players.
  • In Big Ten games, averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds with 31 assists and 49.1 percent shooting.
  • Shot 58.5 percent on two-pointers in Big Ten play, 10th in the league.
  • Had three double-figure scoring outputs, led by 14 points against Caldwell, and had 12 at Ohio State (Feb. 12)
  • Had five games of at least five assists, with season-high seven against NJIT
Scholastic:
  • A 2019 graduate of Gill St Bernard’s in Gladstone (N.J.), where he was an ESPN four-star prospect averaging 18.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 10.1 assists as a senior team captain under head coach Mergin Sina
  • A Rivals 150 member, rated as a three-star prospect, the 36th shooting guard and 139th overall player
  • Denoted as a three-star recruit and 156th overall player nationally per 247 Sports
  • Had 12 triple-doubles and 12 double-doubles as a senior to earn NJ.com First Team All-State honors, while helping Gill St. Bernard’s to a fifth straight Somerset County Tournament title and the North Jersey, Non-Public B final
  • Led GSB to a 62-60 win over the Ranney School, a team ranked No. 6 nationally with two McDonald’s All-Americans, at the Hearts 2 Hands Showcase at Kean University in January 2019
  • Two-time Courier News Boys Basketball Player of the Year and three-time Skyland Conference Player of the Year
  • Averaged 17.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.7 assists-per-game as a junior
  • Had 25 points and 10 rebounds in win over Dwight-Englewood in Non-Public B quarterfinal
  • Averaged 15.0 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists-per-game as a sophomore to earn MaxPreps Sophomore All-American accolades
  • Most Valuable Player of the Hoop Group 2018 Fall Showcase
  • Competed on the AAU circuit for the Playaz Basketball Club
