Rutgers Crew Falls In Henley Final

HENLEY, ENGLAND – The Rutgers heavyweight varsity eight fell to Washington in the final of the Ladies’ Challenge Plate at the Henley Royal Regatta July 6 on the Thames River.
The Scarlet Knights, competing in the Henley for the first time, lost to the Huskies by four and three-quarter lengths in the final. Rutgers was one of three American schools, and one of nine crews overall, competing for the Ladies’ Challenge Plate, which is awarded for the races conducted for the highest level of college or club crews that are not National Teams or Olympic crews. The Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, except during the two World Wars. The popularity and interest in the Regatta has steadily grown, evolving from a single-day event in 1839 to the current five-day format in 1986. In 1851, H.R.H. Prince Albert became the Regatta’s first Royal Patron. Since his death, the reigning Monarch has always consented to become Patron, allowing the Regatta to retain its title of the Henley Royal Regatta.
RU finished its collegiate season with a fifth-place finish in the Petite Final at the IRA National Collegiate Rowing Championships May 29-31 in Camden, NJ.
