Rutgers Edged at #25 Syracuse, 63-61
Feb 10 | Men's Basketball
SYRACUSE, NY - Junior Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) netted a game-high 20 points, including a career-high tying six three-pointers, but it was not enough as the defending national-champion Syracuse Orangemen (15-5, 5-4) outlasted Rutgers (13-8, 5-6), 63-61, in front of 19,796 on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY.
With Syracuse holding a three-point edge at 61-58 with under a minute remaining, freshman guard Quincy Douby (Brooklyn, NY) missed two three-point chances that would have tied the game and Orangemen forward Hakim Warrick converted a pair of free-throws to open up a five-point lead (63-58) with four seconds left in the game. Shields then netted a 25-foot shot for his sixth three-pointer of the contest to cut the lead to two with eight-tenths of a second showing on the game clock, but time ran out on the Scarlet Knights, who drop two consecutive games for only the third time this season.
Syracuse guard Gerry McNamara, who leads the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage and entered the game with a perfect 23-for-23 mark in eight league games, missed a crucial free throw with under a minute remaining to allow Rutgers an opportunity to force the tie.
Rutgers trailed for nearly the entire opening period, heading into halftime down by seven at 30-23. The Scarlet Knights responded, opening the second half on 15-7 run, capped by a three-point play by sophomore forward Adrian Hill (Canton, OH), to regain the lead for the first time since the second minute of the game. Rutgers continued its strong second half performance, scoring five of the next six points, capped by a Shields three-pointer to open up its largest lead of the game at 43-38 with 11:35 remaining in the game.
Syracuse responded with an 8-0 run late in the second half to pull ahead for good.
Senior Herve Lamizana (Abidjan, Ivory Coast) scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the game for the Scarlet Knights. The 6-10 forward also registered three-blocked shots to give him 202 for his 72-game Scarlet Knight career.
Freshman guard Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ) finished with 11 points (two shy of his career-high) and a career-high eight rebounds tonight. The guard tied his career high with three three-pointers in the game on 3-of-5 (.600) shooting beyond the arc.
Warrick, a preseason All-BIG EAST First Team member, scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Orangemen.
The Scarlet Knights tied a season low with seven turnovers in the game.
Rutgers returns home to host Virginia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 15, in BIG EAST action at the Louis Brown Athletic Center at 2 p.m.
