Rutgers Routs Virginia Tech 85-52
Feb 15 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Herve Lamizana scored 20 points, including 13 in a 30-0 run in the first half, as Rutgers cruised to an 85-52 victory over Virginia Tech Sunday.
Rutgers improved to 14-8 overall and 6-6 in Big East Conference play, while Virginia Tech dropped to 10-11, 3-7 in the league.
The game was over not long after the opening tip as Virginia Tech went 10:25 without scoring while Rutgers made its first seven shots and broke out to a 32-3 lead.
The run was finally broken when Tech's Bryant Matthews, the Big East's leading scorer, converted the second of two free throws with 7:41 remaining in the first half.
The streak was accomplished without any points from the Scarlet Knights' leading scorer, Ricky Shields, who didn't score until he nailed a 3-pointer with 1:56 left in the half.
The backcourt of Marquis Webb, who finished with a career-high 16 points, and Juel Wiggan, who had 11, was the major catalyst in the unbroken string as they hit successive 3-pointers from the wings to after Matthews gave the Hokies a brief 3-2 lead by converting a three-point play.
Wiggan then made a steal and fed it to Lamizana for a layup, and Lamizana followed that with a 3-pointer to make the score 13-3 and force the Hokies to take their first timeout with 15:58 left.
Lamizana scored five points and Webb and Wiggan combined for five more to make it 23-3, and the Knights scored nine more points before the run ended with Wiggan's layup accounting for the 30th point.
Matthews, averaging 23.2 points a game, scored 16 of the Hokies' 19 points in the first half as Rutgers built a 45-19 advantage. He finished with 29.
