Rutgers Softball Defeats Mercer, Falls to UNLV

CLEARWATER, FL - On the final day of the Speedline Invitational, Rutgers (6-7) defeated Mercer, 2-1, but fell to UNLV, 5-1, in the fourth-place final on March 7.
Senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) went the distance against Mercer (12-14) to collect her third win (3-3) of the season.
Rutgers scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) laced a two-out double to the right field gap to register the first Scarlet Knight hit since the first inning. Junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) then dribbled a ball down the first base line and beat the throw, allowing Antonucci to score from second for the 2-1 lead.
The Scarlet Knights got on the board in the first. Senior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) led off with an infield hit down the third base line, stole second and moved to third on a hit to the right side by sophomore Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX). Junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) brought Neer home on a single up the middle to make it 1-0. The Bears tied it in the top of the third when Jennifer Dolan came home on a two-out, bases-loaded walk.
UNLV (12-13) chased starter Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) in the second after taking a 3-0 lead. The Rebels added two more runs and the Scarlet Knights could only manage one run against UNLV starter Jacqueline Kerrigan.
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, March 17, when it travels to Maryland for a double header at 2:00 p.m.
