PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman pitcher Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) earned her first career win as the Rutgers softball team split a doubleheader with Rider on April 15 at the RU Softball Complex.

Rutgers (18-21) won the second game 2-0 after it was called due to darkness in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rider (20-11) was victorious in the first game, 7-6.

With the Scarlet Knights holding a slim 1-0 lead in the fifth, Crosby gave up a lead-off double to Rider’s Nichole Mears. Mears advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but Crosby worked out of the jam by striking out the next three batters to preserve RU’s lead.

The Scarlet Knights tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Courtney Love (Houston, TX) scored on an RBI double by Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ). The game was called in the fifth with one out and two runners left on base. Love finished the game with two hits and two runs scored while Smith had two RBI. Crosby scattered four hits over five innings while striking out seven. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate.

In the first game, Rutgers took a 1-0 lead when Love scored on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA), but Rider responded with a two-run home run from Kristin Kenevan. The Broncs led 5-1 before Rutgers scored three times in the fifth, keyed by an RBI single from Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA). In the seventh, the Scarlet Knights trailed 7-4 but Brittany Near (Tallahassee, FL) drilled an RBI double to draw RU within one. Rutgers had the winning run on base later in the inning, but could not drive it home. Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings. She was relieved by Leah Black (Rocky River, OH), who struck out three in 3.1 innings.

RU returns to league play looking to climb up in the conference standings when its hosts Connecticut on Saturday, April 17, at noon, and Boston College on Sunday, April 18, at 12:00 p.m.
