PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior infielder Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District II Softball Team.
Smith led Rutgers with 58 hits, 11 doubles and a .409 on-base percentage this season, and ranked second for the Scarlet Knights in batting average (.345), runs-batted-in (18) and slugging percentage (.411). Her on-base percentage also ranked as the ninth-best mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
Smith owns a 3.845 grade point average in genetics/microbiology at Douglass College. She was one of 14 members of the All-District II Team, a group that represents Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher GPA, and must also be a starter or significant reserve. Members of CoSIDA vote to form the district teams, and those honorees are then eligible for the Academic All-America Team.
Rutgers finished the 2004 season with a 25-29-1 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the BIG EAST.
