Childress to Play Against U.S. Olympic Team

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) will be one of 17 college all-stars who will take on the U.S. Olympic Softball Team June 18 in Salem, VA. The two teams will square off at Salem’s James I. Moyer Sports Complex at 8:00 p.m.
Childress, who completed her senior season with the Scarlet Knights this spring, was named to the 2004 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Northeast Region First Team as well as the All-BIG EAST Conference Third Team. The catcher/outfielder led Rutgers this season with a .350 batting average, 12 home runs, 29 runs-batted-in, 26 runs scored and a .657 slugging percentage. She ranked third in slugging percentage, tied for fourth in home runs, sixth in batting average and 10th in on-base percentage (.407) in the BIG EAST. Childress, a two-year letterwinner for the Scarlet Knights after transferring from Florida Community College, owns the RU single-season (12, 2004) and career (20) home run records.
The U.S. Olympic Team currently is in the midst of a pre-Games tour, posting a 33-0 record during the trip. The first phase of the tour found the Olympians playing in high-profile tournaments against college teams, while the current “grassroots” phase will find the team making stops in 22 cities across the country, including Salem.
The 17 college all-stars all played either high school or college softball in the Salem area.
